Gloxinia Flower

by M. J. Joachim
Gloxinia is a bell flower with a ring of 5 shell shaped petals. I used Size 3 crochet thread and size 1/2.75 steel crochet hook to make the one in the picture. However, you can adjust your materials to the size you need and want, to make the appropriate gloxinia flower for your particular project.
Step 1:  Chain 4, join with slip stitch to 1st chain to make a ring
Step 2:  Chain 1, single crochet in center of ring (5 times); join with slip stitch to 1st single crochet
Step 3:  Chain 1, single crochet 2 times in each single crochet; join with slip stitch to 1st sc. (10 single crochet)

Step 4:  Chain 1, front loop only (flo) single crochet twice in each single crochet (20 sc)
Step 5:  Chain 1, flo sc in each stitch around; join with slip stitch to 1st sc

Step 6:  Chain 3 (counts as 1st dc), double crochet in flo of same stitch; flo double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches
Step 7:  Make 2 flo dc in next stitch and 1 flo dc in each of the next 3 stitches
[Repeat Step 7 around, joining with a slip stitch to top chain of 1st dc in round]
Step 8:  Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc); double crochet in each stitch around, joining with slip stitch to top chain of 1st dc

Step 9:  Chain 1, single crochet in same place; double crochet in next stitch, triple in next stitch, dc in next stitch, sc in next stitch
Step 10:  Work petal shape (sc, dc, tr, dc, sc) over next 5 stitches
[Repeat Step 10 around and join with a slip stitch to 1st sc]
Step 11:  Repeat Steps 9 & 10, working in back loop only of each stitch around

Step 12:  Chain 1, single crochet twice in back loop only of same stitch; triple twice in back loop only of next 3 stitches; single crochet twice in back loop only of following stitch
Step 13:  Single crochet twice in back loop only of next stitch, triple (twice) in back loop only of next 3 stitches, sc (twice) in back loop only of next stitch
[Repeat Step 13 around, joining with a slip stitch to 1st sc]
Finish off. Weave in loose ends.
Step 14:  Take 1 green piece of pipe cleaner and insert it from bottom of flower, through center. Tie a knot on end of pipe cleaner to secure.
Step 15:  Place a light colored bead or button on end of pipe cleaner; twist and secure.
Step 16:  Pull stem down and shape flower.
